1946/47 Foundation of the State of North Rhine-Westphalia

The British occupation forces decide to set up the State of North Rhine-Westphalia on 21 June 1946. Along with the former Prussian provinces of Rhineland and Westphalia, the Lippe region is also included in the new state. The first parliamentary elections of North Rhine-Westphalia are held on 20 April 1947; Karl Arnold (1901-1958) becomes the first elected Prime Minister.
